Don't Let Your Recycling Get Away!

The worst day for recyling is a windy day - and today's a windy day! If you are home, please check on your recycling bins outside.
If your recycling hasn't been picked up yet, ensure recyclables are packed tightly to avoid debris from flying out into the streets and lawns. If your recycling has already been picked up, please take a look around to collect any stray items that may have blown out of the bins and missed by the collection truck.
We've seen many throughout the neighborhood this morning tipped over and stray items in streets which cause a safety hazard. Again, please to collect any items that have spilled over.
For your reference, below are tips to keep in mind when packing recyclables:
When it comes to your bins, put heavy items in the bottom (to weigh down the bin so it won't tip over), but also add a few heavy items on the top (this will weigh down the lighter items in the middle).
Stand up paper and cardboard in the bin instead of laying it flat.
Compact items (crush cans or plastics bottles, flatten paper containers, etc.)
Don't overfill the bin. Keep recyclables below the rim.
Fill any cardboard boxes with loose paper and small recyclables - pack items tightly (think Tetris!).
If necessary, especially on a windy day, hold back your recycling until the next regularly scheduled collection day. There's no limit on how much recycling you can put at the curb.
If all else fails, and your recyclables have blown everywhere, retrieve them! They should be put out for the next regularly scheduled collection day.
It's important that we are all mindful of how we put our our recycling. Recyclables that end up on lawns and in the street are not picked up by the recycling trucks and become unsightly litter. Not only does this devalue our neighborhood and homes, but it also adds to the maintenance costs of outsourcing the clean up of our open areas and detention basin - and, THAT may lead to increased association fees over time.
